Why Bull Shark Season in Playa del Carmen Is So Special
Every year from November to February, pregnant female bull sharks arrive in the warm Caribbean waters of Playa del Carmen, creating one of the most thrilling diving experiences in the world.
It’s not about feeding or adrenaline alone — it’s about witnessing these powerful yet calm predators in their natural habitat.
With clear visibility, mild water temperatures, and shallow sandy bottoms, Playa del Carmen has become the top bull shark diving destination in Mexico.
When Is the Best Time to Dive with Bull Sharks
The season officially runs from November through February, but the peak months are usually December and January, when the number of sharks is highest and visibility can exceed 25 meters (80 ft).
🗓 Best months by experience level:
November: First sightings — ideal for early-season divers.
December – January: Peak encounters — up to 5–10 sharks in one dive.
February: Fewer sharks but calm seas and warmer water.
Water temperature ranges from 26–28°C (78–82°F) — perfect for a 3–5 mm wetsuit.
Where the Dives Take Place
All bull shark dives happen just a few minutes by boat from Playa del Carmen’s coast, at a famous dive site known as “Bull Shark Point.”
The sandy bottom at ~25 m / 80 ft provides excellent visibility and calm conditions, ideal for controlled observation dives.
After the shark dive, most tours include a second in Playa del Carmen Scuba reef dive, where you’ll explore colorful corals, turtles, and tropical fish.
Is Bull Shark Diving Safe?

Who Can Join the Dive
To participate, you’ll need at least an Open Water Diver certification and previous deep-dive experience.
Good buoyancy control and confidence underwater are essential since the dives reach 25 meters.

Daily Dive Schedule
Bull shark dives run twice daily during the season:
Morning: 9:00 – 9:30 AM
Afternoon: 2:30 – 3:00 PM
Each trip lasts about 4 hours, including both dives, surface interval, and safety briefing.
